With Hale as their nominee, the Free Soil Party only received 5% of the popular vote. With Former President Martin Van Buren as their nominee in 1848, the party received more than twice as much support. Many saw the party as one in decline, but after the 1854 outrage over the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Whig Party broke apart – and anti-slavery Whigs joined forces with Freesoilers to create the Republican Party.
